What is Sunderkand?

Sunderkand is the fifth book of the Ramcharitmanas by Tulsidas. It follows Hanuman's journey across the sea, his search for Sita in Lanka and his return to Rama.

It is read as a devotional text and is sung in chaupai and doha form.

How a Sunderkand path is organised

Families normally invite a Pandit and a Bhajan Mandali. The Pandit performs the sankalp and the aarti, and the group sings the text with harmonium, dholak and manjira.

The path normally takes two to four hours, followed by Hanuman Chalisa, aarti and prasad.

When it is performed

Tuesdays and Saturdays are popular, as well as new-home ceremonies and the start of new ventures. It is also read on Ram Navami and Hanuman Jayanti.
